More and more boat owners are turning to Saildrive power as the smart way to best the problems of conventional stern tube shaft drives. The beautiful simplicity of this compact drive systems makes it the sensible choice for numerous types of boats. They've proved so successful that Yanmar has introduced four new models for 2003/2004 from 14-54hp. Not only is reliability a big element in these designs but also is stability, as they eliminate shaft vibrations, noise, alignment and stuffing box problems. The logical power-to-prop direct drive combines all the advantages of the outdrive-inboard systems and has now been well accepted in boating circles. The Saildrive has been found to improve boat balance, give more maneuverability and better thrust. Drive by the JH4 series of Yanmar diesels, these Saildrives put a lot of dependable power in the right place in a boat. Easily installed with a toughened, thru-hull fitting, the newly developed SD40/SD40-T drive units smoothly take the rugged power of the JH4 diesels.
Reliability A Priority.
Just how reliable the Saildrive is can be seen in its record so far. Its dual diaphragm virtually eliminates leakage's. The main diaphragm, made of a tough, resilient material is virtually crack-proof to resist damage from any knocks the prop or shaft may take. This tough membrane is backed up by an inner, highly flexible sub-diaphragm. Between these protective walls is an automatic sensor that sends a warning to the cockpit should there ever be any leakage through the main diaphragm.
Say Good-bye To Noise & Vibration.
The engine becomes a pleasure to switch on when there's no change of any disturbance to peaceful boating. Most conventional drive systems cannot claim the smooth performance of the Saildrive. The dual, flexible diaphragms stop any contact between the drive and the hull, so there's less transmission via the hull of the usual noise and vibration. As the engine is mounted on a firm cushion of three rubber V-block flexible mounts, engine vibrations are dampened before they reach the hull.
Right For Most Hulls.

Hulls with a high engine bed can easily be accommodated by the extended shaft models in the series. These have an 80mm longer reach than the standard units. Their extra hull clearance also enables use of bigger prop sizes.
A Designer's Delight.

The compact design and unique drive characteristics of the Saildrive allow the boat builder to play with many design options. As there is no restricting prop shaft, no fixed mounting brackets, no stern tube and no Kingston cock, placement and installation are simple and quick. The lower drive and gear section can be turn 180ƒ to suit the keel-hull design and the choice of engine bed locations allow the designer full flexibility.
A Triumph Of Synchronization.
The combination of the JH4 engines and newly developed SD40/SD40-T drive units make a blend of power that is close to perfect. The GM, YM and JH3/JH4 engines used in this Saildrive series are among the most compact and lightweight ever developed for pleasure boats. The heavy thrust and high reduction gear ratio make possible an improved bollard pull and extremely stable propeller torque for excellent performance against wind and tides. The fuel economy of Yanmar's diesel is almost becoming a legend and for the long cruisers the fuel efficient performance of these engines can be a real asset.
