In the years since Yanmar introduced the diesel outboard engine it has created waves of excitement in the marine world.
Now, instead of the fickle performance common to so many petrol outboards, the diesel outboard presents a level of stability, savings and long-term strength that make pure sense to the commercial operator.
Tested through time and trials, these engines have proven to live up to Yanmar's aims, gaining both spectacular and solid achievements.
Twin Yanmar diesel outboards powered a seacraft for the first time across the Pacific from San Francisco to Hawaii; a record 2250 miles of non-stop running using only 385 gallons of fuel. Other diesel outboards are powering the economies of numerous coastal communities.
Now in expanded production, the Yanmar diesel outboard is ready to serve even wider in a broard array of commercial duties.
The secrets behind the world's smallest diesel in this class lie in the many revolutionary components and materials used.
This special plastic intake inertia pipe trims down engine weight while helping the engine pump out more power.

Aluminum, used for most engine parts, takes away a lot of weight and also the corrosion problems of ferrous parts.
The super mini fuel injection pump and nozzle used in these diesel outboards is bound to set the standard for future FIE. The highly miniaturised unit injector is not only super-light but has multiple characteristics that best match with the high speed, direct injection diesel.
1. It gives about TWICE the injection pressure of a conventional injection system. This means efficient direct injection and combustion at high speeds.
2. Its precise injection timing allows stable combustion over the full speed range with none of the injection lag associated with conventional systems.

The overhead cam shaft is driven by a timing belt and is highly synchronised with the engine performance. In a creative design feature it also drives the intake/exhaust valves as well as the unit injector, greatly reducing overall weight and volume.
This unique, one-piece aluminum casting gives a sensational weight reduction yet loses nothing in strength. It also eliminates the need for gaskets and, being in a mono-block form, is leakfree. In another achievement of Yanmar's special technology the cast-iron cylinder liner is directly bonded to the body.

The all important combustion chamber has been perfected for the direct injection system in these engines. Yanmar was first to adopt the direct injection system for such small high speed diesels and, to take full advantage of the technology, created the Plum blossom Chamber, now famous in the diesel industry. The happy result for the user is an extra packet of power with every low fuel needs.

Here's how direct injection
gets you the extra power.
1. Intake
Airflow throughout the intake port develops its owns special swirl causing effective air turbulence inside the cylinder.
2. Compression
Swirling air is compressed at stroke, maintaining optimum flow characteristics for fuel injection.
3. Combustion
High speed injected fuel mixes instantly with the swirl energised air causing instant and complete combustion. The result - high output, clean burns and a better work engine.
For trolling, working nets, fish farming, for any low speed operation the diesel can't be equaled. The special combustion chamber, new cooling system (with double thermostats) allow long hours of idling efficiency, simply not possible with a petrol outboard. When idling, the cooling system (with double thermostats) allows long hours of idling efficiency, simply not possible with a petrol outboard. When idling, the cooling water temperature thermostat lowers the cooling water temperature. So whatever your work speed, your engine responds the right way.
