YANMAR MOVES UP TO 16 LITERS
Yanmar Marine
has announced the second in its new SY-STP series of big-capacity diesel engines
for high performance cruisers and motor yachts, this time at 900 hp.
The 16-liter Yanmar 8SY-STP is a 90º V8, designed for more power with less
weight, maximized torque at low revs, improved fuel economy, reduced emissions
and simplified servicing.
Optimum fuel flow is created with twin turbochargers, charge-air cooling, individual
cylinders with four-valve technology and an engine block where fuel supply takes
place on the cooler side. Electronic fuel injectors allow the amount of diesel
injected and its timing to be controlled precisely, from cold starting to idling
and through to open-throttle performance. This results in higher power outputs,
lower fuel consumption and less visible exhaust smoke.
This latest Yanmar has an electronic engine management system, monitoring and
processing data such as engine speed, boost pressure, coolant temperature and
throttle setting. The system adjusts injection timing and the amount of fuel
injected in response to changing operating conditions, maximizing power and
efficiency. Its communications area network (CAN) protocol permits a total overview
of the engine data in real time.
The 8SY-STP is approximately 1651kg (3,637 lbs) fully equipped.
It features
individual cylinder heads that offer substantial weight savings and are light
enough to be lifted and reinserted by just one person. Together with modular
design for fewer maintenance operations, electronic diagnostics and easily accessible
service points, routine engine care is simple and economical.
This compact engine measures approximately 1295mm long x 1245mm wide x 1067mm high (51" long x 49" wide x 42" high).
It facilitates
easy front-end mounting of power take-offs for other engine-driven equipment.
Fresh water is used to cool the entire engine and for the charge-air cooling,
which has an extra circuit to provide the coolest possible intake air. This
contributes further to reliability and long service life.
The engine is fitted with a high-capacity alternator producing 140 amps at 24
volts, easily maintaining a total battery capacity of 160 amp-hours.
Yanmar Marine expects to show pre-production models at the Genoa Boat Show in Italy and the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show in Florida this October (2003).
The first engines should be available to boatbuilders early in the new year, ready for next boating season (2004).
