High Performance straight six

Building on its design philosophy of more power with less weight, diesel engine builder Yanmar Marine has unveiled its newest addition-the 12-liter, 720-hp 6SY-STP engine. Sporting the latest in electronic engine technology, the 24-valve, 6SY-STP continues Yanmar's reputation for producing reliable and fuel-efficient marine diesel engines.

At the heart of the new engine is an electronic management system that monitors and processes vital data such as speed, turbocharger boost, coolant temperature and throttle setting. The system then adjusts the timing of the electronic injectors and fuel flow to ensure maximum combustion and fuel efficiency in response to operating conditions. Using Communications Area Network (CAN) protocol, the engine will communicate easily with other monitoring systems.

Yanmar has engineered other modern features into the 6SY-STP, including separate cylinder heads for each cylinder. As a result, the weight savings over conventional one-piece cylinder heads allows onboard engine servicing to be performed by just one person. The engine also features a high-efficiency, multi-plate oil cooler with internal connections for oil and coolant. Mounted inside the engine block, the oil cooler minimizes exposed plumbing and pipe work. Charge-air cooling is located inside the air inlet manifold, while engine temperatures are maintained by a separate cooling system within the heat exchanger.

The 6SY-STP's block is made of cast iron alloy and the connecting rods are constructed of one-piece, press-forged steel alloy. Also made of steel alloy, the crankshaft's bearing surfaces are hardened and polished. Measuring just 56" long x 34" wide x 41" high, the fully equipped engine weighs in at just under 2,560 pounds.
