LATEST GENERATION FOUR-CYLINDER DIESEL
Yanmar Marine's new 4JH4 diesel for sailboats and motor craft, also available in double-seal saildrive configuration, develops 54HP (39.6kW). It replaces the 4JH3E, but is the same size overall, facilitating easy repowering.
The 4JH4, being built in The Netherlands, is based on a completely redesigned cylinder block and new combustion system, with beneficial power-to-weight ratio and quietness two of the prime design criteria.
This is a naturally aspirated, water-cooled four-cylinder diesel, producing 25% more torque than the model it replaces from less than 10% increased displacement, now at 2.19 litres.
Maximum engine speed is lowered to 3,000 rpm, adding to its significantly quieter running. A larger silencer and the engine's low vibration characteristics also contribute to its average noise reduction of five decibels. The 4JH4 runs cleaner and produces less smoke, complying with BSO/SAV Stage 2 regulations.
For straightforward maintenance, a gear-driven sea water pump is mounted at the front of the engine, close to the fuel filter, oil change and dipstick. A new-design V-pulley ensures long belt life. The 4JH4 has an electric stop solenoid and there is a choice of compact control panels for the dashboard. An 80 amp alternator is offered, with a 60 amp unit provided as standard.
There is a choice of mechanical or hydraulic transmissions, or the heavy-duty SD40 saildrive.
